Book Review ~ Spiders


Bishop, N. (2007). Spiders. NY: Scholastic. 

Summary
Nic Bishop has written numerous book on animals.  This book takes a detailed and very up close look at spiders.  Every page has a magnified picture of different spiders.  It is full of fun, interesting facts for those who want to learn more about arachnids.  It also includes a fold out page showing a spider leaping an extreme distance in comparison to it's size.  




Analysis
Spiders, written by Nic Bishop, epitomizes the type of design that will attract an elementary aged audience.  The cover of the book is an enlarged photograph of a six eyed, red, and hairy spider.  For a student interested in insects or arachnids, this spider book would stand out.  It is definitely an attention grabber. Every page consists of genuine and accurate information on various types of spiders along with close up, detailed picture.  Each picture is captioned to give additional important data about that particular spider. The text is in a large, clear font.  Included on every page is a bold, colored topic sentence that will assist readers in discerning the most important facts on the page.  Mr. Bishop also added two fold out pages to give the reader a photograph that is twice as large as the rest of the book.  Spiders contains an author’s information page to explain how Mr. Bishop studied the different spiders, an index, and a six word glossary.
